William Thibodeaux tells members of the Crowley Lions Club of the efforts of J.G. Medlenka to establish Crowley as a “Gateway to the Gulf” in the early 1900s. The story of the Medlenka River is one of more than 20 stories included in Thibodeaux’s book, “Hidden History of Acadiana.”

Crowley a river port?

A one-man crusade to make his home town an inland port was mounted in 1904 by a Crowley attorney and civic leader, J.G. Mendlenka.
And it almost worked.

Walter Peat, right, CubSight Program coordinator for Louisiana, was the keynote speaker for the Tuesday meeting of the Crowley Lions Club. Peat, accompanied by his wife Melinda, former state director for hearing, speech and vision, recognized the local club for its efforts in child eye screening. Welcoming the couple to the meeting is Lions Club President Keith Frederick.

The Crowley Lions Club was cited for its efforts in conducting eye screening for youth through the statewide CubSight program.
