Rayne awarded district award during judging

RAYNE - Following last month’s win for the 2019 District Cleanest City Contest, judges arrived at City Hall on Tuesday, April 23, for the state judging.
Led by State Chairman Jean Gilstrap of the Louisiana Federation of Garden Clubs, Rayne was judged in Category F (population), which also included the cities of St. Martinville, Plaquemine, Winnsboro and Winnfield.
Cities are categorized by population including eight district and 36 cities who won their respective categories this year.
Judges for the state judging were Patsy Hebert of Abbeville, Shirley Key of Oak Grove and Kyle Martin of Covington, each welcomed by city officials, Rayne Garden Club Chairman Lisa Soileaux and Garden Club members.
Following a welcome by Mayor Charles “Chuck” Robichaux and the Rayne Garden Club, guests enjoyed a light noon meal and a special gift bag from the city prior to the judging portion of their visit.
Gilstrap who presented Mayor Charles Robichaux the District Cleanest City plaque earned during the March judging, also addressed the crowd.
“We love to visit Rayne,” Gilstrap said during her presentation of the district plaque from the Louisiana Garden Club Federation.
“We are always impressed with your city — I know it’s beautiful year-round — and you go above and beyond for the Cleanest City judging.”
Following his introduction of special guests, city officials, Garden Club members and volunteers, Robichaux thanked everyone for their help for the contest, in addition to the public’s year-round help in keeping the city clean and appealing.
“Our citizens always take pride in our city, no matter the time of the year,” Robichaux concluded.
Announcement of the state winners will be made following the completed judging on Friday.
The Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. Cleanest City Contest is 75 years old, with Louisiana being the first and only state to have such a contest.
