Rayne Wolves named to All-District baseball selections
Although the Wolves fell in the first round of the 4A state baseball playoffs, Rayne High’s 2016-2017 baseball season was still a productive one.
The Wolves were 11-6 overall and 6-4 in district play.
“We began the year on a rough note but came back strong when it counted,” stated Rayne High Head Baseball Coach Jason Bonin. “We had a young team and from that, we saw some leaders come through for us.”
Of those leaders, six Rayne High players were named during the 3-4A All-District selections.
1st Team
On the mound, senior leader Hunter Meche was named among four All-District pitchers for the second year in a row. For his senior campaign, Meche recorded a 3.33 ERA and 23 strikeouts during district play.
In the infield, junior DeMarcus James was noted at first base. James slapped in a .413 batting average with 52 base hits and 13 RBIs on the season.
2nd Team
At third base, Rayne High freshman Julian Harvey was named, along with sophomore outfielder Darian Richard.
Landing a spot as utility player for the Wolves was sophomore shortstop Zack Fontenot who also helped out at second and third during the season.
“We have a bunch of guys returning next year which will definitely help us out,” Bonin continued. “We had a number of underclassmen playing this year who will return and step it up a notch next year.”
