LAFAYETTE - The Notre Dame Pioneers took care of business Friday night as they easily defeated the Comeaux Spartans 34-14 at Allen Comeaux Field in Lafayette.
Overall the Spartans were the much faster and larger team.
However, their occasional big plays were offset by turnovers, penalties and, to be honest, playing disorganized football.
By halftime, though they were only down by two scores (20-6) it was obvious to anyone in attendance that the Pioneers perfect (3-0) record would remain intact.
“Sometimes it’s hard to get boys motivated for games like this,” said Coach Cook. “They see where St. Thomas More scored 65 against them and Lafayette High scored over 50. I had to let them know that there’s some good athletes on that team and they can be dangerous.”
The Spartan’s quarterbacks Colin Leger (who was injured at the end of the first half) and Jayden Sonnier, as well as tailback Tre Roy and receiver Jay Domingeaux had their share of big plays for Comeaux and look as though they could play for any team in Acadiana. Any momentum that they initially created was quickly destroyed by a Notre Dame defense that plays with a consistency that the Spartans have yet to find this season.
The Notre Dame rushing attack was dominant again on Friday.
Jake Brouillette (111 yards on 18 carries) once again led the Pios, who suffered no drop off when Luke Lavergne (76 yards on 12 carries) entered the game. The Pioneers only attempted eight passes with quarterback Jackson Link completing five of them for 68 yards
Overall, the Pioneers had 344 yards on offense with 277 of them coming on the ground.
In the past two weeks, Notre Dame has rushed for over 600 yards.
The unsung heroes on the Pio offensive line deserves big credit for their run-blocking skills, having opened holes in the defenses they face that are visible from the stands.
“Those guys have really come together,” said Cook. “We returned three starters from last year’s team. Our line was so young last year but they’ve gained experience and stepped up for us.”
The Pios did commit their first turnover of the season when Link tossed an interception to the Spartan’s Jordan Dejean. The speedy Comeaux defensive back appeared to be headed for a pick-six, but he was caught at the 15-yard line by Pio Tripp Mixon, who seems to be making a habit of touchdown-saving tackles this season.
Pioneers Sam Bernard and Kade Cooley each had key interceptions the ended Comeaux drives. Jack Cassanova and Johan Hensgens (one sack apiece) led a Notre Dame pass rush that consistently frustrated both Comeaux quarterbacks.
“Our defense has been coming up with big plays for us so far this season,” said Cook. “Tripp Mixon made some big tackles for us tonight.”
After Brouillette scored the game’s first touchdown to give the Pios an early lead, both teams exchanged turnovers before Leger hit Domingeaux in stride from 34 yards out to even things up at seven.
Brouillette responded with a seven-yard touchdown run to put the Pios back on top 14-7.
The play that seemed to kill any Comeaux hopes occurred with just over two minutes left in the first half as Comeaux lined up for a punt deep in their own territory. The Pioneers got a perfect jump on the snap and got to the Comeaux punter before he could attempt his punt causing a fumble that was recovered by Hensgens in the end zone. The score gave the Pios a 20-6 lead that would never be threatened.
For Comeaux, the first half ended on a particularly bad note when Leger was injured on the final play before the break.
In the second half, Brouilette came out on fire as his physical runs brought the Pioneers down to the two-yard line. From there, he took the ball in on an inside run to extend the Pios lead to 27-7.
After a Link to Teddy Menard toucdown pass increased the Pio lead to 34-7, Cook brought in his backups to close out the game. A cosmetic Comeaux touchdown in the game’s final minute by Jaden Sonnier completed the game’s scoring
“We were fortunate in that we didn’t have to pass the ball that much tonight,” said Cook. “We made it through without any injuries and kept the number of penalties down this week.”
With Class 4A opponent Teurlings visiting Gardiner Memorial Stadium next Friday, the Pioneers will be facing their fourth consecutive opponent (five if counting Lafayette High in their Jamboree win) from a larger school to begin the season. When asked if there was a reason for the tough schedule Cook responded with a smile.
“The smaller schools won’t play us,” he said, mentioning Jennings as a school that wouldn’t add the Pios to their schedule.
Notre Dame’s regular season win over Southside and jamboree victory against Lafayette High look more impressive with each passing week. Neither team has lost since facing the Pios, with former Crowley defensive coordinator Cedric Figaros’ Lafayette Lions blowing out three straight opponents to start their season undefeated.
The Pioneers brought their penalties down impressively from last week when they had 13 of them called on them against St. Martinville. On Friday, only three were called for 26 yards.
The Pios finally play a game at Gardiner Memorial Stadium when the Teurlings Rebels come calling at 7 p.m. Friday night.
